Insurance can be tricky when you're buying new glasses, but we try to make it as easy as possible for you to understand and save the most money. After accepting many of the major insurance plans such as Eyemed, Davis Vision, Spectera and others for many years we have found that filing for out of network reimbursement often gives our clients a better price.
We know when you hear the words "out of network" you may think that these glasses must be more expensive. But keep in mind many of your insurance companies own their own frame and lens companies so they are often trying to funnel you towards their own products by offering what looks like a larger discount. But what if I told you they also charge significantly more for their products when compared to a similar product from a private company? This is often the case, and it's one of many ways they fund their multimillion dollar marketing budgets. Often times we can save you close to $100 or more by processing your glasses out of network, take a look below to see one example of how we do this.
This is the breakdown on a popular Eyemed plan for progressive lenses, you can see that typically without insurance but going through one of Eyemed's labs these glasses would cost you $830. After Eyemed discounted these glasses it appears that they are giving you a 50% discount.
But now let's take a look to see what you would pay for the same frame and comparable lenses and coatings from a private lab.
As you can see it is $44.25 more expensive, but keep in mind this is BEFORE you receive your reimbursement check back from your insurance. On this particular plan you would receive an additional $125 back in reimbursement and end up saving $80.75. Every insurance plan is different and some plans will reimburse you significantly more. The plan used above is one we see often in our offices.
We do accept a handful of insurances in network. These are plans that we know we can't give you a better price by going out of network and we are all about giving you the best deal we can.
Opticare of Utah- We accept all Opticare of Utah plans and will do the billing work for you. Most of the time you should have a card with a member ID and plan number, this helps us pull up your information faster. If you do not have the info on hand, no worries. We can figure out the info it just takes a little bit longer.
Samera Health- We also accept all plans of Samera Health (previously known as Town & Country and Matrix.) These plans are often explained as reimbursement plans but we have been told directly by Town & Country that we can bill them directly so you no longer have to wait that 4-6 weeks to receive your reimbursement, you get what they cover right up front and don't have to worry about owing anything later!
Others- There are a handful of other plans that are supplied by local companies. If you don't see yours on this list please feel free to contact us directly and we can answer any questions you may have.
While you may not see any of the large nationwide plans on the list above, don't worry we are able to bill these out of network for you and save you money while getting your glasses to you faster than if we billed everything in network.
Eyemed- We accepted Eyemed in network for many years, but the example above shows why we no longer accept it. If we are able to save you money in the end while giving you glasses that we are more confident in then it's a no brainer for us to do what's best for our clients.
VSP- We do not accept VSP but we handle it much like Eyemed. These plans are very similar and we are often able to save our customers money while getting them the glasses they want rather than the glasses VSP wants them to have.
Spectera- Spectera is another insurance we accepted for many years, but their benefits got worse and worse as time went on for our clients. And after a handful of years of them consistently losing or breaking frames sent to them and receiving lenses with incorrect prescriptions we decided it was best to part ways. The good news is we can still bill these out of network for you and like the above insurances save you money in the long run.
Davis Vision/Superior Vision- It has been many years since have accepted Davis Vision, but they have recently acquired Superior Vision which we accepted for many years. They operate similarly to the above but have a significantly longer turnaround time, meaning you may be waiting months to receive your glasses. So we'd rather save you the time, hassle, and money and get these done for you while billing your benefits out of network.
We hope this helps answer some of the questions you may have about your vision discount plans. If you have any other questions regarding your vision plans please reach out, we are always happy to help.
